When people think of aviation in Kenya, the first image that often comes to mind is Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA)  the country’s main international gateway and one of Africa’s busiest hubs. Yet, just a few kilometres away in the Lang’ata area of Nairobi lies an airport that quietly outperforms expectations in movement, training activity, and aviation density. Wilson Airport, often overlooked in mainstream aviation conversations, is in many ways the real heartbeat of Kenya’s domestic aviation ecosystem.

Established in 1929 as Nairobi West Aerodrome, Wilson Airport is one of the oldest functioning airports in Africa and carries a deep historical legacy tied to the early development of aviation in East Africa. It was originally developed by Florence Kerr Wilson, a pioneering aviation entrepreneur whose early airline operations helped shape commercial flight in the region. In 1962, the airport was renamed Wilson Airport in her honour, cementing its place in Kenya’s aviation history. 

Today, Wilson Airport serves as Kenya’s primary hub for domestic and regional flights, especially to remote airstrips, safari destinations, and secondary cities that are not efficiently served by larger jet operations at JKIA. While JKIA handles the majority of international and jet-based traffic, Wilson operates at a different but equally critical level of aviation  smaller aircraft, high-frequency operations, charter services, humanitarian flights, and flight training.

In fact, Wilson Airport is one of the busiest airports in East Africa in terms of aircraft movements. With thousands of take-offs and landings annually, it handles a constant flow of general aviation traffic, including executive flights, medevac services, cargo charters, and tourism operations. 

What truly distinguishes Wilson Airport, however, is its role as the aviation training capital of East Africa. The airport hosts an unusually high concentration of flight schools, maintenance training institutions, aviation academies, and professional pilot training centres. Institutions such as Kenya School of Flying, Flight Training Centre, and numerous other KCAA-approved academies operate directly from Wilson, making it the most important aviation education cluster in the region. 

For aspiring pilots, engineers, and aviation professionals across Africa, Wilson Airport is often the first point of contact with real-world aviation. It is not uncommon to see multiple training aircraft operating simultaneously within the same airspace, conducting circuits, touch-and-go landings, and navigation training flights. This creates a uniquely dense aviation environment rarely seen elsewhere on the continent.

The airport also plays a vital role in supporting humanitarian and specialized aviation services. Organizations such as AMREF Flying Doctors and Mission Aviation Fellowship operate from Wilson, providing critical medical evacuation and remote area access across East Africa. These operations highlight Wilson Airport’s importance beyond commercial aviation  positioning it as a lifeline infrastructure hub for the region.

Despite its heavy usage, Wilson Airport operates with relatively limited infrastructure compared to its traffic volume. The airport has two asphalt runways and supports predominantly propeller-driven aircraft due to its operational design and urban surroundings. Over the years, concerns have been raised about congestion, airspace safety, and urban encroachment, especially as Nairobi’s skyline continues to grow closer to flight paths. 

In response to increasing operational pressure, the Kenya Airports Authority has undertaken gradual upgrades at Wilson Airport over recent years. These include improvements to air traffic control systems, runway maintenance, and airfield infrastructure enhancements aimed at improving safety and operational efficiency. A new air traffic control tower was also initiated in previous modernization phases to support growing air traffic demand and improve coordination in the busy Nairobi airspace. 

There have also been ongoing discussions around broader modernization and expansion plans to support increasing aviation activity and relieve pressure on JKIA. While Wilson Airport is not intended to replace JKIA’s international role, its importance as a domestic and training hub has made it a strategic asset requiring continuous investment.

Another defining feature of Wilson Airport is its deep integration with Kenya’s safari and tourism aviation industry. Small regional airlines and charter operators use Wilson as a departure point for flights to destinations such as Maasai Mara, Amboseli, Lamu, Kisumu, and coastal airstrips. This makes Wilson not only a training and general aviation hub, but also a critical driver of Kenya’s tourism economy.

Interestingly, while JKIA handles the majority of passenger volume in Nairobi, Wilson Airport often surpasses expectations in operational activity due to the sheer number of small aircraft movements throughout the day. In aviation terms, it is a high-frequency, high-density general aviation airport operating almost continuously from morning to evening.

In many ways, Wilson Airport represents a different side of African aviation one that is not defined by large wide-body aircraft or international prestige routes, but by foundational aviation activity: training the next generation of pilots, enabling regional connectivity, and sustaining essential aviation services across East Africa.

As Kenya continues to position itself as a regional aviation hub, Wilson Airport’s role becomes even more critical. It is not just a secondary airport in Nairobi; it is the backbone of Kenya’s aviation ecosystem and a training ground for the continent’s future aviation professionals.
